Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: First Impressions

Downloaded and ready to play!

I took the leap yesterday and purchased Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on Steam.  I am not a huge fan of the Assassin’s Creed games, I didn’t play past the first and second ones.  However, I love Greek mythology and ancient history so I was really looking forward to this game.

The Game so Far…

I have been playing for one day only on my AMD Ryzen 5 custom built PC. I set the difficulty to hard and I think I am going to change it to the next hardest difficulty because I am finding the game pretty easy so far.  The game opens up with some familiar characters – for fans of Greek myth, history or even just fans of 300.  Your first experience in combat is with King Leonidas himself.  The opening scenes do an excellent job of setting the stage for the game, and establishing the time period – during the Peloponnesian war.

Kassandra looking fierce.

I chose Kassandra and she is amazing so far.  Her characterization is very well done.  Her backstory is intriguing and is revealed little bits at a time. I just hit level 4, have had a chance to pick up some equipment upgrades and get lots of practice sneaking and using the bow.  The game reminds me very much of The Witcher 3.  Something about the mechanics and the scenery.  I have nearly finished fully exploring the small starting island.  The game map is huge, there are several islands and land masses still left untouched.  I can’t wait to delve deeper into the game.  If you, like me, are wary of spending so much money on brand new games, jump the gun on this one.  It’s worth it!

System Requirements

Being new to PC gaming, my PC is not yet a high end gaming PC. It is running fairly decent specs for most activities, but I was worried about running an AAA game like Odyssey.   I only have the on board graphics card that comes with the Ryzen 5 2400g processor and no dedicated GPU.  Because of this, I had to tinker quite a bit with the display and graphics options.  The game menu comes with lots of information about each of the settings so you can gauge visually when your settings are going to be too high to run efficiently.

On full 1080p resolution, the game’s frame-rate dropped fairly low resulting in an unplayable game.  Even if you don’t have a top of the line GPU, there are many different options to tinker with until you find one that runs well with a proper compromise in graphics. I settled on medium graphics and 1440 x 900 resolution.  The game runs smoothly, without stutters, and the graphics are only slightly diminished. I also needed to update my video driver.  The game will send you a notification right away if your driver is out of date.

Final Thoughts

I am really looking forward to completing this game, it has a lot of potential so far.  The characters are interesting and the game world is huge.  Assassin’s Creed Odyssey promises many hours of entertainment. I can’t wait to write a full review once completed. I will post some game-play videos in the upcoming weeks also.

Can’t beat that view.

Have you picked up the game yet? What are your thoughts?

This is Sparta!
